Agency management system (AMS)

Software that serves as an independent insurance agency's system of record: clients, policies, documents, renewals, commissions, quoting and certificates. See the AMS overview.

Insurance CRM

Customer-relationship management software tailored to insurance agencies, tracking contacts, leads, tasks and retention alongside policies and renewals. See insurance CRM.

Comparative rater

A tool that sends one applicant's details to several carriers and returns premiums side by side. See comparative rater.

ACORD 25

The standard Certificate of Liability Insurance form published by ACORD, commonly used to give proof of liability coverage to third parties.

Certificate of insurance (COI)

A document that summarizes a policyholder's coverage and is issued to a third party such as a landlord or contractor customer. See COI software.

IVANS

A data-exchange network that lets agencies download policy information and documents from carriers directly into their agency management system.

Producer

A licensed insurance agent or salesperson who sells policies for an agency.

Book of business

All of the clients and in-force policies an agency services.

Commission statement

A carrier's periodic statement listing the commissions it paid an agency, by policy.

Producer split

The percentage of commission an agency pays the producer who wrote or services a policy. See commission tracking.

Declarations page (dec page)

The summary page of an insurance policy listing the insured, coverages, limits, premium and policy period.

Renewal check-back

A proactive contact with a client ahead of renewal to review coverage and prevent non-renewals or lapses.

Client portal

A secure website where an agency's clients can view policies, get ID cards and request certificates themselves.
